This summer, law enforcement officers and firefighters across Eastern Washington have been getting drenched for a cause! Law enforcement agencies from nearly every county in Eastern Washington have teamed up with local Special Olympics athletes to raise funds, build awareness, and strengthen community ties. With 17 Cop-on-Top events already completed, they’ve raised an impressive $57,869 for Special Olympics Washington programs, with two more events still on the horizon.

At Cop-on-Top events, first responders are elevated about 10 feet in the air on lifts, armed with buckets of water and squirt guns. Meanwhile, below them, Special Olympics athletes eagerly grab squirt guns from water-filled buckets, ready to engage in playful water fights. The excitement spreads quickly, drawing in passersby who join the fun—whether they’re toddlers or seniors in their 80s. These spontaneous water battles create moments of pure joy and laughter, while supporting a meaningful cause. The events also promote inclusion, as athletes and community members of all ages come together as equals, sharing in the fun and embodying the spirit of unity that lies at the heart of our mission.

Though the Cop-on-Top events are lighthearted, the impact of the funds raised is profound. The money collected helps ensure that athletes can participate in year-round sports without financial barriers. Funds go toward providing crucial resources like sports training, leadership development, and health programs, which empower athletes to excel both on and off the field, making a lasting difference in their lives and communities.

If you haven’t had a chance to join the fun yet, there’s still time! One more water fight is scheduled for September 21 in Quincy. And for those who prefer to stay dry, three Starbucks locations in Pasco will host Cop on a Coffee Shop on September 20 from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. This event promises all the fun without the water, so you can enjoy yourself without worrying about getting drenched before work.

If you’re in the Tri-Cities area or Quincy, come out and have some fun with local athletes, law enforcement officers, and firefighters. Let’s end the season on a high note and make a splash for Special Olympics Washington!
