Through the power of sports, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) discover new strengths and abilities, skills and success. At Special Olympics Washington, our athletes find joy, confidence, and fulfillment, both on the playing field and in everyday life. Even more, they inspire their families, teammates, and communities to open their hearts and minds to a broader world of human potential.

There are more than 190,000 people with IDD in Washington state. Our goal is to reach every one of them, and their families, with meaningful opportunities to play, grow, and thrive.

If you or someone you know is ready to get involved, here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Register Online

Visit portals.specialolympics.org to create an account and complete registration forms. You’ll need to decide which type of profile to create:

  • Athletes: Create an Athlete Profile
  • Parents/Guardians: Register on behalf of an athlete by creating a Parent or Circle of Care profile
  • Support Roles (coaches, Unified partners, chaperones): Apply under the appropriate role

All athlete registrations require completion of a health history form and signed waivers and releases. If you’re unsure which profile you need, visit bit.ly/SOWA-PortalSupport for help or to view one-pagers with step-by-step instructions.

Step 2: Medical Clearance

To participate in practices and competitions, all athletes must have a current health form on file. These forms are valid for three years and can be completed online. If you’re due for a new one, we recommend scheduling a physical exam early—clinic appointments can book quickly!

Not sure where your status stands? Use our Verifying Your Participation Status guide.

Step 3: Get Connected Locally

If you’re new and haven’t yet been matched with a local team, we’ll help you find one! After you complete registration, you can:

  • Visit our Find a Local Community page to connect with a Program Coordinator

Or submit a request at bit.ly/SOWA-PortalSupport and a staff member will follow up

Step 4: Need Help?

We offer weekly virtual office hours where you can meet with a staff member one-on-one and get your questions answered.

Wednesdays | 12–1 PM & 6–7 PM PT
