Nothing About Us Without Us
The purpose of Athlete Leadership is to empower athletes to develop leadership skills and to utilize their voices and abilities to undertake meaningful leadership roles, influence change in the Special Olympics movement, and to create inclusive communities around the state.
Athlete Leadership Opportunities
Athlete Input Councils (AICs) provide an opportunity for athletes to express their ideas, concerns and recommendations at the local level, helping improve the quality and integrity of their Special Olympics programs. Area Input Councils elect one representative to serve on a statewide input council to bring feedback to the state-level staff.
Other Opportunities: Special Olympics Washington athlete leaders have served in a variety of leadership roles including Special Olympics Washington board members, coaches, team captains, event volunteers, ambassadors, and more.
Athletes serving in leadership roles are required to complete the corresponding workshops to train for the roles.
