Angela Martin has been an athlete with Special Olympics Washington for all 50 of those years - and her journey is nothing short of remarkable.

She first competed in swimming and track at Fort Lewis in the 1970s. Her favorite event? Butterfly. She swam it in 1975 - and just last week, she swam it again in the 100 IM at Regionals.

Angela also skis, golfs, and is looking to join a bowling team. Beyond sports, she served 9 years on the Special Olympics Washington Board of Directors and found confidence, community, and lifelong friends through the movement.

She’s worked at Grange Insurance for 33 years, was recently promoted, owns a home, and even met her boyfriend through Special Olympics.

“Special Olympics is about more than medals,” she says. “It gave me strength - physically and mentally - and friends for life.”

Help ensure athletes like Angela have 50 more years of opportunity. Donate $50 today to build the future of inclusion. Use the link in our bio.

Meet Evelyn Schulz. She joined Special Olympics at age 13 and now bowls with the Moses Lake Scorpions. Inspired by her friend Cortnie to give it a try, Evelyn quickly found a community that felt like home. “I’ve met so many friends and got to know everyone,” she says.

What she loves most is the way Special Olympics brings people together. One of her favorite memories is the dance after the games. “Everyone comes together—whether they’re on your team or not. No matter if you lost or won, we still celebrate, and that’s the best thing.”
Evelyn’s story reminds us what true sportsmanship and connection look like.

As we honor 50 years of Special Olympics Washingto As we honor 50 years of Special Olympics Washington, we're sharing the stories that define our legacy - stories of resilience, growth, and community.

Today, we're proud to spotlight Montez, a longtime athlete who has been competing with Special Olympics since 2011.

When Montez first joined, he wasn't very talkative. However, he began to open up through the social connections and supportive environment of Special Olympics. "It helped me get out of my shell," he says, and his speech improved as he started engaging with others.

One of the things Montez treasures most is the friendships he's built. That sense of connection became especially clear after he had to step away from the games for brain surgery. When he returned, his fellow athletes' outpouring of support and excitement made a lasting impact.
"I love how much it changes lives," Montez shares.
