There’s something magical that happens when community, inclusion, and a whole lot of fun come together on the ice. This year’s Breaking Ice and Breaking Barriers event — our fourth one yet! — was a shining example of that magic in action.
Hosted at the Kraken Community Iceplex, the rink was filled with laughter, high-fives, and colorful cheer cards as athletes, families, volunteers, and partners laced up their skates and took to the ice. Whether you were gliding with ease, learning to balance for the first time, or cheering from the sidelines, the joy was contagious.

The energy was electric from the moment guests arrived. Friends reunited, new connections were made, and everyone found their place in the celebration.
And of course — it wouldn’t be a celebration without a few surprises! Raffle winners went home with signed Kraken gear, and Buoy, the beloved Kraken mascot, made an appearance to the absolute delight of our athletes and fans.

This event has become a true favorite in our community, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a reminder that inclusion doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes, it looks like a skate, a smile, and a shared moment of joy.
This year’s celebration was made even more special as we honor 50 years of Special Olympics Washington. For five decades, we’ve been building community, breaking barriers, and creating spaces where everyone belongs — and this event was a perfect way to celebrate all that and more.
To our friends at Smartsheet and the Seattle Kraken, our amazing volunteers, and every single person who showed up with heart and spirit: thank you. We’re already counting down the days to the next time we hit the ice together.
