Dear Friends, Supporters, and Champions of Inclusion,
As we celebrate 50 years of Special Olympics Washington, we reflect on the lives we’ve touched, the barriers we’ve broken, and the communities we’ve built together. But as we honor our past, we must also look ahead—because there is still so much work to do.
Recently, at our basketball regional competition, a young athlete named Alex competed for the first time in individual skills. Just days before, Alex was brutally bullied at school and called the “R” word. It is heartbreaking that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD/DD) still endure this cruelty.
But what happened next is where the power of Special Olympics shines. At the competition, Alex was surrounded by his family, his special education teacher (who now wants to bring Unified Champion Schools to their district), and an entire community that welcomed him with open arms. His smile said it all—he had found a place of kinship, kindness, and belonging. And to top it off, his team placed 4th!
This is why we fight for inclusion.
For every Alex out there—waiting to be seen, to be celebrated, to belong—we must continue to show up. Special Olympics is more than sports; it is a lifeline. It transforms lives, builds confidence, and creates communities that stand against exclusion and injustice.
Investing in the Next 50 Years
As we mark this milestone anniversary, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of Special Olympics Washington.
- To our donors: Your generosity has fueled five decades of impact. We ask you to deepen your commitment so we can reach more athletes, train more coaches, and expand our programs.
- To new supporters: Now is the time to join us. Whether you give $50 in honor of 50 years, or make a transformative investment of time, your support will ensure every Alex has a place to belong—not just today, but for generations to come.
- To our volunteers: You are the heartbeat of this movement. Thank you for believing in our athletes and creating spaces where they are celebrated. Keep showing up, keep advocating, and keep fighting for inclusion.
This anniversary is not just about looking back. It’s about looking forward—because inclusion is not a moment; it is a movement.
I invite you to join us—not just in celebration, but in action. Let’s connect and explore how we can work together to ensure the next 50 years are even more impactful than the last. Reach out to me or our team—we’re ready to build this future with you.
With gratitude and determination,
