The Special Olympics World Games is an event like no other. Since its debut in 1968, the World Games has provided athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) the opportunity to compete in sports, demonstrate their unique gifts and abilities and celebrate monumental victories. These games inspire people around the world, reminding us of the beauty of inclusivity, acceptance and perseverance as we witness athletes unite across international borders.

The 2023 Special Olympics World Games, held in Berlin, Germany, carried on this quadrennial tradition. From June 17 – June 25, this year’s World Games hosted 7,000 athletes competing in 26 different sports.

The United States of America was represented by 96 athletes, and we are proud to say that two of these athletes—Kellen Mendez and Mitchell Hibdon—were selected to represent Washington State.

Mendez, from Longview, has been involved in Special Olympics Washington for four years. While he has competed in athletics (track and field), basketball, bowling, flag football and softball in the past, he was chosen to represent the United States in athletics at this year’s World Games. He performed incredibly well, placing fourth in his 1500-meter event with a time of 5:21.54.

Hibdon, from Olympia, has been involved in Special Olympics Washington for eight years, beginning his athletic career as a bowler. It wasn’t until he discovered powerlifting, though, that he found this true passion. Hibdon showed incredible strength in all four of his powerlifting events at this year’s World Games, earning a medal in each one.

But the Special Olympics World Games is more than just a competition. It is an international display of empowerment, dedication, unity and resilience. It represents hope, joy and unlimited possibilities for individuals with IDD, and it leaves a lasting mark on the hearts of athletes, families and volunteers who are involved in its mission.

These games inspire people around the world, reminding us of the beauty of inclusivity, acceptance and perseverance as we witness athletes unite across international borders.

Kellen and Mitchell, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to both of you for your exceptional representation of yourselves, Washington State, and the United States of America. Your remarkable achievements have filled us with immense pride and admiration. We eagerly look forward to witnessing the incredible feats that Special Olympics Washington accomplishes in the future, inspired by your extraordinary accomplishments.
