As we gear up for 2025 State Spring Games, we’re As we gear up for 2025 State Spring Games, we’re celebrating 50 stories that honor the incredible people behind Special Olympics Washington—including coaches like Casey Smith. Casey co-leads the Unified Sports program at Skyview High School, where he coaches upper division basketball, lower division soccer, advises the Unified Rally, and supports the Unified cheerleading team. His journey into Special Olympics started unexpectedly but became one of the most rewarding parts of his life. “I kind of just fell into it,” he shared. “I was new to the school and chatting with our wing clerk when the topic of coaching came up. I signed up to coach Unified on the spot—without even fully knowing what it was.” Since 2022, Casey has been all in. Though he also coaches football and baseball, Unified holds a special place in his heart. “These kids are so appreciative and just good kids,” he said. “Playing and representing their school means the world to them, and I love being part of that.” One moment he’ll never forget: In the 2023 district championship tournament, after a hard-fought game, one of Casey’s teams made a buzzer-beating tip-in to win the title—sending the entire student section storming the court in celebration. “Unified has been my favorite program to be part of, and I’m so happy I got involved.” Celebrate leaders like Casey by donating $50 to help fuel the next 50 years of inclusion, leadership, and unforgettable memories.
