At Special Olympics Washington, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and grow. Our Young Athletes program, designed for kids aged 2 to 7, introduces the basics of sports in a fun, inclusive environment. The program is perfect for children of all abilities, with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

This year, we are excited to focus on bringing Young Athletes into schools across Washington. Schools provide a fantastic environment for kids to explore physical activity while fostering teamwork and acceptance. We support teachers and school staff in implementing the program by providing an Activity Guide, equipment, and all the resources necessary to launch the eight-week program in their classrooms.

So, what can students gain from participating in Young Athletes?

  • Motor skills: Kids with ID who joined our program saw a huge improvement in their motor skills, progressing seven months ahead of where they started. For comparison, children who didn’t participate saw only a three-month gain.
  • Social, emotional, and learning skills: Teachers and parents have noticed big changes in children who participate. They’re more enthusiastic, confident, and better at working with others—skills that will serve them well as they transition through school.
  • Raising expectations: Families have told us that Young Athletes has helped them envision a brighter future for their children.
  • Sport readiness: The program helps children develop the movement and sports skills they need to participate in sports as they grow older.
  • Acceptance: Inclusive play benefits everyone. Children without ID learn to better understand and accept others, creating a more inclusive community.
