During State Spring Games weekend, athletes, families, and community members gathered for a powerful celebration of culture, movement, and inclusion at the Inclusive Indigenous Games Showcase.
Designed to introduce participants to Indigenous sports, traditions, and teachings, the showcase created opportunities for athletes to learn, connect, and experience new activities in a welcoming and supportive environment. Throughout the day, participants explored a variety of sports and cultural experiences, including basketball, lacrosse, hockey, Native Youth Olympics activities, and traditional Native teachings.
The event highlighted the important role that sport can play in bringing people together while honoring the rich traditions and cultures of Indigenous communities. Whether participants were trying lacrosse for the first time, learning new skills on the court, engaging in Native Youth Olympics activities, or listening to cultural teachings, the showcase offered meaningful opportunities to build confidence, foster understanding, and create lasting connections.
Beyond the activities themselves, the day served as a reminder of the power of inclusion. Athletes, Unified partners, volunteers, and community members came together to celebrate differences, learn from one another, and experience the joy of belonging.
The Inclusive Indigenous Games Showcase would not have been possible without the incredible support of our partners. Special thanks to Rise Above, PNW Native LAX, ‘Tseen, the Seattle Kraken, and the Seattle Storm for helping bring this unique experience to life.
As Special Olympics Washington continues to expand opportunities for athletes of all backgrounds, events like the Inclusive Indigenous Games Showcase demonstrate how sports can create pathways for connection, understanding, and community. We are grateful to everyone who participated and helped make this year’s showcase such a memorable part of State Spring Games weekend.
