On July 22, we kicked off our 50th Anniversary in unforgettable fashion: by raising the Special Olympics Washington flag high above the city at the top of the Space Needle.
Athletes, community leaders, and longtime supporters gathered with us to mark this powerful moment. It was more than a celebration. It was a reminder of how far we’ve come, and a bold statement about the inclusive future we’re building together.

The Flag is Raised
There’s no better place to fly our flag than above Seattle. Even for just a few hours, seeing our flag fly high above the city was powerful. It stood as a symbol of progress and pride for the thousands of athletes and families who are part of our community.
Athlete Leaders at the Top
Angela Martin and Candace Madison, two of our incredible athlete leaders, helped lead the celebration and represented the heart of our movement.
A Powerful Circle of Support
The rooftop celebration brought together a wide range of supporters who have played meaningful roles in advancing our mission.
Some of our VIP attendees included Angela Martin and Candace Madison, Special Olympics Washington athletes; Kasey Keller, former goalkeeper for Sounders FC and the U.S. Men’s National Team; Alisha Valavanis, CEO of the Seattle Storm; Erika Tucci, Executive Director of the Ben B. Cheney Foundation; Ethan Stowell, celebrated chef and restaurateur; Seattle Seahawks legend Lofa Tatupu; Mario Bailey, VP of Community Engagement at the Seattle Seahawks; Sara Osborne, Senior Director of Public & Government Affairs at Safeway; Scott Mercer, Vice President of Global Supply Chain at The Boeing Company; Bob Benoit, Chief Information Officer at the Gates Foundation and Special Olympics Washington Board Member; and Mary Do, CEO of Special Olympics Washington.
Together for Inclusion
Mary Do closed out the morning with a message that captured the spirit of the day: “This isn’t just a flag. It’s a signal to the world that inclusion matters here.”
Athlete Joy in Every Frame
At the center of every photo, you’ll find what this celebration is all about: our athletes. Their joy, leadership, and determination continue to push this movement forward.
This is just the beginning. Our 50th Anniversary year is about honoring our past, celebrating our present, and activating our future. Thanks to everyone who joined us to raise the flag and launch this milestone year with pride.
